Prologue:
prior to beginning the diary, I'd like to attach a link to a playlist containing most - if not all - of the music I listened to today. Food and music are often linked for me as I usually listen to music as I'm cooking and eating; they form a fundamental part of my down time, in tandem with one another.
Monday's playlist:
Monday:
I wake up much later than I wanted to, so I rush out of bed and fix together a quick smoothie with kale, banana, blueberries and strawberries. The kale takes up too much real estate in my tiny blender so as I rinse it I crunch it between my fingers to break it down into a more appropriate volume. The smoothie doesn't blend well and I'm left unsatisfied, with flakes of kale lingering between my teeth.
After catching up with the already fading day I crave something hearty and spicy for a late lunch. I find a can of kidney beans and decide to improvise a kind of mexican breakfast affair, with eggs poached in spicy braised beans with lots of chilli, lime and garlic. I bake leftover tortillas until crisp and break them into shards to dip into the yolks and guacamole.
In stark contrast to the bleak smoothie earlier in the day, this meal is a roaring success. I eat it straight from the pan, scooped onto tortilla chips, offering carefully sculpted bites to my housemate hard at work next to me on the kitchen table.
I join some friends at a pub quiz in the evening, and snack on chips from the fish n chip shop next door, doused in salt and vinegar. I repeatedly burn my mouth in the process but I refuse to let them cool, grateful for the warmth in the cold November weather.
