for breakfast i make my aunt helen’s pancake recipe: 1 cup of flour, half teaspoon baking powder, 1 cup of yoghurt, an egg. i cook them on the griddle pan to give them crinkles and top them with yoghurt, banana, walnuts, dried fig, maple syrup, and salt.
i have school for a few hours and then ask nora to play a game with me that i used to play with my friends hannah and alice when i was a kid. in this game one person is blindfolded and the others feed them various things on spoons that they then have to identify by smell, taste, texture.
i record my reaction in audio~
spoon one
i first think it might be honey~but it’s kind of spicy~i wonder if it’s date syrup but think it doesn’t taste datey enough~it’s kind of spicy?~nora maybe you have added spicy to some honey?
spoon two
i laugh after eating this all off the spoon because i have absolutely no idea what it is~it’s kind of gritty~and spicy~the spice intensifies ! it’s really very spicy
spoon three
i recoil from whatever this is upon impact with my lips and tongue~nora insists i should to eat it quick to counteract the spicy but i really don’t like the texture~i try again and again recoil~they say it’s one of my most-often-eaten foods and all i can think of is yoghurt? but it’s got lumps~maybe porridge? it’s not porridge. it’s horrible and gritty~i ask what colour it is and nora says beige and it becomes immediately obvious that it is hummus!!!!!!!!!!
i take blindfold off and it is revealed that to me spoon one was indeed date syrup
and spoon two was harissa, but some harissa got on the syrup spoon, thus explaining the
spicy.
we both are craving a stretch of the legs and to be among trees so head out toward pollok park. we meet a crow sitting on a log that seems like it might be injured. we crumble off bits of rotting bark from the log and find bugs to give to the crow to eat. it’s keen on the woodlice and the worms but is totally disinterested in the slug we thought would be most appealing.
on the way home we each get a meal deal from morrisons. for me a gluten free cheese and tomato sandwich, boiled egg snack pot, and sparkling lemony water. nora has a falafel wrap, veg samosa, milky coffee in a can.
later at home i do a bit of work while nora makes us sandwiches for dinner. toasted bread with butter, crunchy peanut butter, sticky fried tofu, parsley, mayo, lettuce, sweet red pepper, radish. they fried the tofu in corn starch and some spices and it’s remarkably chickeny and delicious. we watch an episode of seinfeld while eating and then they go home, goodnite. i cover myself in vicks vapo rub and get into bed to watch youtube on my phone~
